Over time the chrome plating wears and becomes thin from cleaning then the polished finish gets dull. This is what causes most molds and dies to fail and need repair. When certain plastics get burnt (PVC, glass, regrind, etc), they give off a gas very similar to muriatic acid. What do plating shops use to dissolve chrome off of molds & dies? Muriatic acid and water (50/50 mix). When electroless nickel is applied properly it is more durable, harder, keeps the finish longer and will out last conventional hard chrome. Best part is, muriatic acid has absolutely no effect on electroless nickel it at all. Electroless nickel plating is harder than chrome and is easier to clean and maintain. All hard chrome plating & nickel plating is done to strict Military Spec QQC-320B, Mil Spec QQC-320B Class 2A & Mil Spec Mil-C-26074B Class A Grade 1
